This video was posted on Cycling in Wellington recently but I think that it is so good and so informative for complete infrastructure luddites like myself, that I thought it should go on Cycling in Auckland as well ….
I’m sure I’ve seen the ‘what not to do’ version around Auckland.
Perhaps these Dutch people really know what the’re talking about!

Sadly, the standard response to this proposal for many locations in Auckland from Council would probably be “how is a truck-trailer / articulated truck going to fit around there, if the side islands reduce the size like that? We can’t make that fit.”
Compare 2:14 to 2:16 – a truck going right would need the extra space the side island removes. Or go through the intersection very slowly, swerving wide through the middle.
So either the Dutch all use very small trucks, or do they simply ban the very large ones from a lot of streets?
There seems to be a tendency to design many of our NZ intersections for a vehicle that may travel through it once or twice a day, if at all. I had proposed cycle facilities on Onehunga Mall rejected for that reason…
Clearly this is a great way of doing things and explained in such a way that even an Auckland transport Planner could understand it. Max, nice to know that someone has already tried to suggest doing something like this at least once. Surely low volume vehicles which wouldn’t be-able to navigate this particular design could simply take an alternative route?
