Is there a lobby group in New Zealand fighting to have the bicycle helmet law repealed?
Or are we waiting to see what will happen in Australia?
So sensible yet so ignored. It just makes no sense to me.
Wow, a mayor who really looks like a cyclist, we need some more of those in these parts.
I like the Darwin idea of no helmets required on bike paths and side walks, that would be a baby steps approach to addressing the problem, just need to get side walk riding legal first!
Legal sidewalk riding and no helmet requirement when riding off the actual road would both be fantastic. I already do both of those at times but feel a little guilty.
the footpath is one of the most dangerous places for cyclists as
1. the comparative speed of cyclists vs. pedestrians and usually poor visibility for drivers coming out of driveways, and
2. that turning drivers don’t expect cyclists to come off footpaths at intersections
combine to drive a 20% increase (from memory) in crash rates along streets if footpath cycling is allowed
sorry, it’s not a good idea unless you’re under 5 and can’t ride very fast, even then, you might be below the line of sight of a driver backin their SUV out of the driveway and only looking for cars down the road
