Tribute to a friend and fellow cyclist (the killing continues).

News came in this week of the death of Catherine Sheehan. She was hit by a car while cycling in Malaysia.

I have fond memories of Cathy. I first met her over a decade ago through cycling colleagues. We obviously had similar interests because, over the years, we would often ‘bump into each other’. I always felt comfortable and at ease around Cathy.

I remember an afternoon spent at her home in Devonport. It was a Sunday and Cathy had led a group of us on a cycle tour of the North Shore. She invited us back to her home at the end of the ride for afternoon tea. She had recently become the owner of a very nice, second hand, tandem bicycle. I must have admired it alot because Cathy offered to lend it to me, for as long as I wanted.

Back then I recall her talking about her desire to do some cycle touring overseas. It really was her passion, her dream.

To Cathy: Arohanui. It was never meant to end like this.

To Cathy’s family: My deepest sympathies.

A memorial service will be held for Cathy at Wakatere Boating Club

Cathy was atheist so it will be a secular funeral – a celebration of Cath's life.
