Did you get wet today?

6 Jul 2011  |  Posted by

People often blame the weather for not cycling but I ride everyday and very rarely get wet. Today, for instance, I remained dry – it was chucking it down when I was ready to leave this morning but I just waited 10 minutes and it stopped. Same deal coming home.

It rains in countries with very strong cycling cultures as well – so don’t think that particular excuse will ‘wash’ with me!

Copenhagen is known to have a spot of rain (and pretty fierce head winds and snow) on occasion!

    • I got absolutely drenched today. Romelli and I were riding the tandem from K'road to Grey Lynn to pick up some Linda McCartney pies from Harvest Wholefoods when it started raining. We stop under the shelter by the Grey Lynn Postshop, but the wind picked up like crazy, knocked over signs and wheelie bins, and threw buckets of water all over us. We laughed, gave up our pie mission, and rode down the hill back home in Western Springs to stick our clothes in the dryer. I have NEVER gotten that wet before riding my bike, at least not so quickly. Water was literally dripping off my jeans into my shoes.

Normally I am prepared, but today was an exceptional situation.

    • Sounds kind of dumb but since moving here Ive worked on the rule that auckland has three kinds of days, wet days, dry days and showery days. Wet days you know you gonna get wet, but very often on showery days you can shelter and wait it out.
Narrowly avoided heavy squalls both on the 15 minute ride to/from work and a 10 minute each way trip to a afternoon site meeting. In all cases arriving dry as a bone.

    • pretty lucky today, on my daily commuting to town from te atatu peninsula via north-west cycle lane (wicked cycle lane!) the storm hit around round 08.00 i found refugee under the roof of a bakery and wait for few mins. way back tonight was dry, no problems, but hard wind in the face and then on the side. but yea, folks, keep on ruding even with bad weather! cars were all stucked on the motorway ;-)

    • Why am I not surprised in that video that the only person driving like a complete wanker was in a 4WD?

    • This morning was the first time in 4 years of daily riding I have got really soaked! Well, from the waist down anyway, my jacket kept the top-half dry.

I keep a back-up set of shorts, socks and undercrackers at work for just such an occasion but I couldn't be bothered changing. The dangly-bits were still dry so I just looked like I'd had an accident for an hour while the air-conditioning did it's thing.

    • Wet in the morning, dry in the evening. I'm fortunate I have shower/change facilities here at work and of course at home. I actually really enjoy cycling in rain – in fact any conditions except head-on wind. Always remember from my time in military, " Skins waterproof- if it aint raining it aint training, if it aint snowing we aint going'!
