Cigarettes and cars – what do they have in common?

In many European cities it is now becoming socially unacceptable to drive cars in cities. Germany has a ‘Brain on, motor off’ campaign and check out this lovely video about free hugs … note that the text on the sign says “free hugs … but not for motorists!”

A recent report from the USA also found that teenagers want ipads not cars, and want to live in an appartment rather than the ‘burbs’ – times are a changing!!!

I’ve posted this one before but I think it really makes the point.

    • Sadly the world is changing more slowly in some places that others, but we keep trying to change it for the better…

    • I found myself in the new Akl 'burb' of Botany, yesterday. What a shocking experience. Four lanes of speeding cars as far as the eye could see. This is 'modern' urban planning in Akl!! Let's focus on promoting cycling in the central parts of Akl, first of all.

    • South East Auckland is an urban wasteland.

      Perhaps because of the environment I find drivers from that part of the city to be the worst to deal with.

    • PT hubs with suitable bicycle parking like the ones I saw in Japan would be a possible way ahead. How else could the dependence on cars be removed? The park n ride facilities on the Northern busway seem to defeat the purpose because the hubs are full of parked cars. An integrated system that allows cars to be left at home would be a better option, surely…
