Are you a weenie?

If you really want to change the world, don’t be a weenie. Be a teacher. Be kind in helping people overcome their ignorance. If you’re so talented, you shouldn’t be surprised or angry at how stupid everyone else is. Make it fun and safe for them to learn. — Scott Berkun, The attack of the design weenie

And that there, ladies and gentlemen, is the core of what Cycling in Auckland is. I know we do go on quite a bit about normal people on bicycles but it is not our intention to make people who enjoy their road bikes feel bad. I have a road bike. It’s good fun. A mountain bike that gobbles up cycle trails for lunch is on my wishlist.

Whether we cycle for transport, as part of a fitness regime or—heaven forbid—just for fun, let’s not be petty and belittle the motives of our friends. Our numbers are so small that we can’t afford to stay mad at each other if we want to make things better for everyone.

So if you see another fellow on two wheels on your journey today, ding your bell. Say hi. Nod that silent knowing nod. I promise to nod back at ya!
