I recently updated the Great Rides page on the Bike Friendly North Shore Blog. All these posts have also featured on Cycling in Auckland at some stage but have mysteriously gone walkabout from the Where To page. I’ve put them all in one place on my site so you don’t have to search around.
There’s nothing grand here, no all-day epics, just little gems we stumbled upon that you might like too. Kid-friendly destinations, urban mountainbiking or simply a short-cut between suburbs, there’s a bit of everything.

nice Antoine,
we rode Tuff Crater about a month ago and the council had laid some pretty coarse gravel on the path through the tank sites (just below Canon), about 40-50mm sized chunks, which was pretty loose and didn't make for easy riding
@Steve C: That section was just grass and dirt when I rode it (which I prefer). Hopefully the big rocks are just the base layer of the surface.
I think they were freshly laid and may pack down in time,
there was a gravel path laid over the meadow below the old folks home, the grass got a bit slushy in the winter
You're right – can't think why this is … possibly and update. I will look into it.
Antoine – your great rides are brilliant.
I work in Hedgehog Bikes in Albany and are often asked by those new to cycling where they can cycle on the North Shore. I'm definitely going to be pointing them to your blog.
@Deb: Thank you so much. I was in your shop looking around the day I rode out to the Royal Albany Trails to take some pictures. It may of been you I chatted to about a lightweight Marin 20" MTB for my daughter. I was the tall lanky guy on the Surly CX bike.
