Tricycle

I am still looking for a folding tricycle/cargo bike. It has turned out to be a lot more difficult than I originally thought. I tracked down the perfect cargo bike in the Netherlands (Feetz) but unfortunately, even though I have money burning a hole in my pocket desperately wishing to turn itself into the perfect cargo bike, they just would not respond to my emails or comments.

I have searched the web at length and have found a website that has a lot of useful links on it the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, which is hilariously ironic as one of the reasons I want a tricycle is to be able to legally ride without wearing a helmet! For those who have only just joined us in this discussion, the helmet law in NZ only applies to a bicycle and does not apply to a unicycle, a tricycle or indeed a cycle with any other number of wheels except two. Read these posts to catch up:

I have thought about trying to get hold of the Pashley Tri-1 but I don’t know if its a bit boring. I’ve also toyed with this golf trike, even though I don’t play golf. But I think my next plan is to possibly get hold of a retro folding bicycle and have it converted, these guys seem to do this sort of thing.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

In which case I suggest that you carry a small wheel with you in your basket or pannier. That way you have three wheels.

I am assuming that the law doesn't explicitly state that the wheels *must touch the ground*, and that it merely states 'two wheels'.

You may need a good lawyer to argue the case in court though!

    • You can borrow my unicycle to experience the freedom of riding helmet-less and the exhilaration of blood trickling down your shins as you learn to ride it.
