Kate M from Christchurch asks:
I’ve recently moved to Auckland from Christchurch to continue my studies at Unitec. I would love to be able to safely ride my roadie to school from my home near Whenuapai. I’m aware of the NW Cycleway from Waitakere towards the city, but I’m unsure of how to best tackle the Massey to Waitakere section. Any suggestions? They would be really appreciated.
Has anyone done this route and can help her out?

Hi
I assume you are talking about getting from Massey to Te Atatu where the cycleway joins the motorway. I haven't done this whole route but there is a newish cycle lane along Triangle Road from Don Buck Road which continues across Lincoln Road towards Te Atatu. There is anther route from Te Atatu to Henderson. The two routes join somewhere here though I'm not sure where.
PS
confusing West Auckland place names: you might be meaning Henderson when you say Waitakere. Henderson was known as Waitakere Central when Waitakere City Council was there.
Waitakere (township) is another place entirely – at the very end of the western train line.
Hi, are you riding to Unitec's Mt Albert Campus or Henderson Campus? There are now cycle lanes on much of Triangle Road and they meet the new bike lines and path on Central Park Drive. So if you can get to Massey you can ride on bike path/lanes or quiet streets all the way. If you are going to Unitec Henderson, there is a bike path starting just below Trust Stadium, by the bridge over Henderson Creek but this might be too slow for a roadie! Beyond Massey you are fairly much on your own and on roads with fast moving traffic. I understand there will be a cycle path alongside the Brighams Creek rd link to the new motorway but not sure when this will be completed. Cheers, Mark.
Yes the posters here are correct, Triangle Rd, then across to Central Park Rd, and a little way along it is the turn off for the cycle path that then runs beside the motorway between Lincoln Rd and Te Atatu, and links with the Te Atatu Rd end of the cycleway to Carrington.
check the Auckland Transport/Council websites for the Western map of cyclelanes, they are all marked on there, and excellent map.

This is the way I go every day. It is all either shared cycleway or segregated cycle way except for part of Central Park Drive, Flanshaw Road, Royal View Road, and Milich Terrace. Those roads SHOULD have shared cycleways, as they are on the main NW cycle route. But they don't.
