Bike-share for Auckland?

17 Jan 2011  |  Posted by

Did you know that Auckland Council has put out a ‘Request for Expressions of Interest’ for a bike-share scheme? You can read all about it on The Bike-sharing Blog. There is also some interesting information on AKT about it.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a slick bike share system such as Barclays bikes, Velib, Bixi!

Of course we still have the big problem of the compulsory helmet law that is stifling bikeshare in Melbourne and Brisbane … but it has occurred to me that if some clever person came up with a ‘trike-share’ instead of a bike-share, we would wiggle through this silly law and potentially have a hugely successful bikeshare such as Dublin and many other forward thinking cities.

    • Yeah its the Helmet thing which kills off this ….I wont rant anymore about how stupid that law is

Great to see plenty of cyclists out without helmets cycling around Auckland ore the break …

    • @Richard – I've thought of that one but i suppose the only way to test the theory would be to try and get caught an then put your case forward … the difficulty here is trying to find a police man, then get them to question your lack of helmet. I've haven't worn a helmet for years and I cycle past the police station twice a day!
