We know what Auckland’s transport problems are. It’s now time to focus on real solutions. Consider this: more than half of the Auckland City budget will be spent on transport. Billions of dollars annually. Wouldn’t you like to have some say on how that money is spent by our politicians?
All political candidates are happy to acknowledge the issue of Auckland’s worsening congestion and the need to solve it. But how are they going to achieve it? In the past, politicians have publicly stated their desire to support sustainable transport options. But when the crunch comes, they are the first to put the boot in; to maintain the status quo.
It’s now time to ask the political candidates to identify the sustainable transport options that they will support. No ifs or maybes required. Just a simple yes or no, please. These politicians need to be held accountable post election for the promises made pre election. Power to the voters. But first we need to sort the wheat from the chaff.
The stakes are too high to leave it all to the throw of a die.
