I read two very different reports of road problems today; one from Copenhagen and one from Auckland. What struck me about the reports was not so much the road problems but the solutions suggested by ‘the powers that be’.
Copenhagenize.com reports that Copenhagen has been having torrential tropical rain storms that have flooded roads and liberated sewage, creating hazardous road conditions … and the safety precautions suggested by the police?
“If it looks bad, take public transport or your bicycle”
In contrast, Auckland Transport Blog reports that we are having a civil emergency of our own – the Southbound closure of a small piece of motorway in Newmarket on a Sunday … and the advice?
A consortium building the $215 million replacement viaduct has said in an email to schools that to prevent major disruption on arterial roads on the weekend of the southbound closure – from 5pm on Saturday, September 4 – it will be “essential to avoid driving anywhere in Auckland unless absolutely essential”.
“We are requesting people not to travel”
Absolutely classic. NZ car addiction at it’s best!!
You’ll excuse me if I carry on as normal … on my BICYCLE.

LOL – good observations!! Yep, I'll get on my bike that weekend…
