Spotted along Greys Ave. Photo via Sideswipe
The week started out pretty average until I spotted this rad photo in Sideswipe. I would like to know who that person is so that I can shake his hand. Well done, sir!
I hope you are comfy on your own couch because there are more videos than usual in this week’s linkpilation:
- Wrapping your bike around a lamp post takes on a whole new meaning.
- While on the subject of unusual bicycle securing thingamabobs, check out these bike racks slash public art in Nashville, Kentucky. Oh and the Judy Bailey doppelganger.
- Cute of the week: five-year-old doing some huge drops and tricks on his way to kindergarten
- Meanwhile, a London couple are threatened with being referred to social services for letting their children cycle to school. D’oh!
- Yoxi are challenging creative cookies to come up with an initiative to increase the number of cyclists on the streets of urban areas. Check out all of the video entries. This one (above) put a huge smile on my face.
- Chunky excerpts from The Cyclist’s Manifesto: The Case for Riding on Two Wheels Instead of Four are now online on Google Books. It explores why the bicycle should be taken seriously as a method of transportation and not just a hobby.
- Because I don’t have hobbies
- Urban Velo shares nine tips for running successful bike events
- Light vehicles? Pedestrians? The Japanese are befuddled by their own cycling laws
- Architect Ellen Dunham-Jones gives a TED talk on retrofitting sururbia
- Joshua Arbury put some thought into retrofitting the CBD on Transport Blog
- Amsterdam prove they love their bikes in what constitutes as my first foray into the Danish rap music scene.
- Tutorial on how to build your own cargo bike
- Finally, I’d like to share this fixie vid from my hometown, Kuala Lumpur . It’s shot in Putrajaya which is a fairly new (about ten years old) housing development and home to almost all the central government offices. In other words, a bit of a dead town with huge strips of asphalt everywhere.

The guy who sold his sofa to the sofa-bike guy told his part in the story the next day on Sideswipe. Apparently the bike guy bought the sofa (one of two) on Trademe then arranged a time to pick up the sofa.
When bike guy turned up, the sofa seller said he'd give him a hand to put it on the trailer or on the car roof. Mr Bike guy said no he'd take it on his bike. Mr Sofa seller laughed and said you're joking. Mr Bike guy said no, he wasn't and transporting stuff by car emits carbon and he didn't want to do that.
He apparently transported two sofas this way. Good on him!! I can see him setting up a bike transporation and delivery company here.
Hand-shaking just got upgraded to beverage-purchasing! Thanks for filling in the gaps, Chris
