I’m not ashamed to admit that my interest in sports is stereotypically that of most girls, chiefly because I was never any good at it myself. But it’s hard to escape the hype around international events such as the the World Cup in South Africa that just started a few days ago. Also, they have a maneuver fondly known as the bicycle kick. This week’s choice links:
- The Holland/Belgium World Cup Bid delegation, including Ruud Gullit, Johan Cruyff, and co-chairmen Michael van Praag and Francois De Keersmaecker, arrive at FIFA House by bicycle. They proposed providing two million free bikes for the visitors to the event.
- Some researchers at Massey University are trying to find out once and for all: is it more efficient to climb the hills sitting or standing? (Personally, I do the long climbs sitting and very short ones standing)
- The Aussies have found a novel way to recycle old ink cartridges: paving a 17km bike path!
- On the other side of the world, the Mayor and Transport for London are pouring serious money into new and improved pathways through the green and traffic-free areas around the city to encourage more people to get out and about …
- … a bit like having a permanent bike tour riding map for the London Festival of Architecture
- Tokyo Fixed Gear made this awesome homage to Akira poster. Nike wanted them to build a bike for the Tied Together marathon to help battle AIDS with the (RED) charity.
- Cycling ear worms. Here comes the sun, doo doo doo doo … ♫
- “I first noticed bicycles on the cover of the New Yorker in the early eighties. within a few months, a succession of other covers appeared.” The result is a Flickr set in progress (via Trackosaurus Rex)
- How’s this for a neat front basket? The Bent Basket, made from five layers of vacuum-molded wood veneer, will strap down almost anything you throw on it
- New to commuting? Here are 6 tips for making it stick. My take on #2: get something road-worthy but start with an inexpensive bike—you can always upgrade later
- Antoine has a cold and the only cure for it is a bike ride around Campbells Bay

Lastly, the International Bicycle Film Festival is ten years old! Time to organise one in Auckland?

Here's another good one-

Is this my Warhol 15 minutes?
Loved the Akira Homage, not so sure the breakfast tray would survive a month of commuting on my bike.
@MoreCityPlease: That is an awesome vid!
@Antoine: Yeah, the basket is for people who live in cities with smooth roads and no potholes
