Other than bicycles, I take a keen interest in the web industry and have been following FullCodePress in Wellington closely over the weekend. It’s basically a geek Olympics where teams build a website for a not-for-profit organisation in 24 hours straight.
What’s different this year is the introduction of a third player: Team USA. And how excited I was to spot the team HTML/CSS marker-upper, Daniel Mall, sporting a bicycle t-shirt!
Unfortunately, the Code Blacks didn’t make it a hat trick—the Codaroos took the trophy home this year. Injured pride aside, everyone was a winner on the day.
- Daniel Mall isn’t the only one who likes bikes, designer Jason Santa Maria (in red jacket) recalls his favourite birthday gift.
- Boneshaker magazine is a nicely designed bike publication with a big focus on photography and illustration. They have a limited print run of 1,000 copies and will even ship to New Zealand.
- Puma, with some help from Biomega, release these cool cats into the wild. Check out Pico and Nevis Man with the integrated front rack handlebars.
- Speaking of beautiful details, Shimano’s “Coasting” chain on the 2010 Kona Band Wagon fixed gear bicycle will never go unnoticed
- A TV and film industry hair stylist takes photos of celebrities on her blue cruiser and posts them on her blog.
- Unicycle to bicycle and vice versa in two minutes.
- A Vancouver city councillor writes: “The good news is this: cyclists do pay their fair share. Arguably, they’ve been receiving less than their due in transportation investment for many years.” This is changing in the USA where $1.2 billion is being spent on cycling and walking initiatives
- But he also adds, “cyclists can ride naked, if they insist, but they must wear a helmet”. And that explains why the last time Auckland hosted a World Naked Bike Ride was in 2005. I certainly didn’t see anyone wearing headgear at the Nude Blacks’ game.
- Apropos of cycling in the buff, don’t miss The Misfortunates playing at the New Zealand International Film Festival. It’s a little bit like the Dutch version of the Outrageous Fortune. And what do Dutch people do? They cycle! Here’s the trailer.
- Another cycling event to hit our fair city is the World BMX champs! Vector Arena will be hosting the event in mid-July of 2013 with purpose-built tracks.
- Want Auckland to be more bike-friendly? We need fewer “cyclists” and more “people who ride bikes”
- I dislike Queen’s ‘Bicycle Race’ song vehemently—especially when it is used to accompany every single bike-related news story on television—and this takes the cake! Ah, Eurotrash …
