I’m Alex. Once upon a time I came home with a shiny new Marin commuter bike to transport myself to and from university. That bike was my pride and joy. She was as quiet as a mouse and flew like the wind. I had a rear rack and some sweet panniers for my stuff, and of course, a little chrome bell. Times changed and I fell in love with the simplicity of single-speed bicycles. Way too much of my student loan living costs were spent on customising my machines – getting the rims and saddle matching just right. Cycling has become just a normal everyday part of my life. I think that’s how it should be.
I do still have that Marin commuter. It’s got a giant basket on the front and you’ll see me out on Tamaki Drive cruising with my dog or overloading it with groceries at Countdown and wobbling home. I’ve been known to hang out with the fixed gear kids and every now and then I even gear up and take my road bike for a spin. Whatever bike I’m riding I can seldom stop smiling. There’s nothing like the freedom of hopping on your bike and just going. I suppose I’m here because I want everyone in Auckland to know that feeling. At the very least, I’m here to share some of my cycling exploits with you.
