This Saturday: join the Wynyard Quarter opening festivities

4 Aug 2011  |  Posted by

Wynyard Quarter aka Tank Farm Quarter is finally ready! The construction work that has been humming over the past few months are ready to be unveiled this Saturday, August 6th. I’m rather excited about the potential of this area. Lots of shared spaces and (soon-to-be-open) shops, trams and a cinema. Oh my!

Check out the full programme here.

Cycle Action Auckland will be running two bike buses to the Waterfront Area departing at 11am from Mission Bay’s Mecca and Ponsonby’s Western Park. Ride to the event and you won’t only save on gas but coffee too! There will also be hourly jaunts around the waterfront (starting at noon) departing from Silo Park.

    • I went for an early peek last weekend and was really impressed; thinking wow, unique, and like a real city! Looking forward to the official opening on Saturday. I haven't felt this optimistic about Auckland in quite some time! It has potential to be amazing asset for us all.

    • Ah Steve – take it in good cheer. Heritage cars you may sometimes see driving on Auckland roads generally aren't made in NZ either…

Agree with Ian, looking good. The above is just an artists impression, but if the weather holds, the reality should be nearly as "slick".

    • Enjoyed a quick preview last night – cycle access is great – easy to cross from the Viaduct, and there's a handy ramp up to the viewing platform. Big open spaces suggest possibilities – must be somewhere to play some polo? – wasn't sure how much will be parking once construction workers leave.

    • Yup, fully aware of the artists' impression photo — but they seem to be coming to life on the shared spaces projects off Queen Street. There is plenty to be optimistic about :)

Also, here's hoping the mostly-ornamental trams are a means to an end — that they will install a line connected to Britomart and beyond.

    • just got back, loved it, some really thoughtful design although we didn't get across the Wynyard Crossing because it opened and got stuck!

a big crowd just cruising around, lots of happy kids in the playground

    • I have some fab shots of kids having and absolute blast … Perhaps soon we'll have more than just vomiting teenagers in the CBD!

    • It was great, this is even better than Melbourne's Federation Square.

There are really great things happening in Auckland, outside the library is one example.
