350 Big Bike Fix Up in 2010

This is just a quick post to remind you to keep the 24th of September free in your diaries.

Why? Because it is the day for a big international day of action on climate change which is being organized by 350.*

Every year 350 likes to organize these days of mass action for people around the world. These have included some cool events such as the cycling workshop shown above. This year the theme is Moving Planet and it is about moving beyond fossil fuels.

There are a variety of activities being planned that day in Auckland including a big bike ride.

Where & When: Meet at the Wynward Quarter playground at 11 am. Finish at QEII Square at 1 pm.

Then we’ll all walk up to Aotea Square with banners etc. They are asking people to come dressed as their favourite fossil fuel alternative. Personally I’m having trouble coming up with a costume that won’t dissolve on a bike. Any thoughts? What will you wear?

*350 for those of you who aren’t climate wonks is the number of parts per million of carbon dioxide that scientists say we can afford to have in the atmosphere without doing serious damage to our planet’s global equilibrium, creating an environment that is much more hostile to human life with many more extreme weather events, sea level rise, mass extinctions and other depressing things. 350 is a global organization that works on many issues, most notably recently on trying to stop the President of America approving construction of a massive new oil pipeline from the Canadian tar sands to the USA.

    • I’ll come as a chocbar… One chocbar powers my bike for 11km… Same calories of petrol gets the average car 400m… How cool are bikes : )
