The shock of the death of an innocent person riding a bike on Tamaki Drive has not subsided as much as I thought it would have. But that death is only the tip of the iceberg. Five people in a week. Five innocent people. And to add salt into the wound, members of the media and the general public continue to suggest that people who choose to cycle have it coming to them.
While I notice that some motorists have been extremely polite and courteous to me while I am riding, I also am noticing what appears to be an increased level of antagonism. I hope it is simply a case of me feeling hyper sensitive to my environment. Whatever the reality, it is now time to act. Here is a chance to voice your opposition to the status quo. Reclaim your city.
Cycle riders have paid with their lives to demonstrate how badly change is needed. We invite everyone:
- who has ever ridden a bicycle
- who would cycle if it was safer and easier
- who want their family and friends who cycle to be safe
- pedestrians and motorists – we all share the same road

So the entire "rally" is being held on the wharf? Is there no road-riding component?
I had assumed a ride along Tamaki Drive was being organised that would be camera-friendly for the media and a show-of-strength for the cycling community.
We could always go for a ride afterwards :^)
My thoughts exactly. The rally is open to everyone who supports a desire for change. Ownership of a bike is not a prerequisite to attend. It would be nice to finish off with a people on bikes ride.
I'm up for a ride afterwards. I'm sure plenty of people would be as well..
I will be there too. I am committed.
I also would like to ride, however I am bringing my family possibly but I will ride after the rally or whenever the time is right
Bring a friend as well. It's not just about cycling. It's about people, respect, community…how we want our city to be.
Mark, have all the "sports" cycling organizations and clubs been invited? It would be great to see plenty of roadies, mountainbikers, BMXers etc on the wharf.
We want to make sure the rally details are distributed as widely as possible….to all tribes of cyclists and potential cyclists. Everyone is encouraged to help spread the word.
