The Velociteers synchronised cycling performance

Judging from the feedback we received, our appearance engendered a new appreciation of cycling: not only is the bicycle a brilliant form of transport, it’s also an excellent vehicle for artistic expression.

What a pleasure it was to be a part of this inaugural event that brought art to the public in the delightful surrounds of Western Park. The Velociteers is the brainchild of artist and cycling advocate Barbara Grace. She rounded up eight like-minded bike enthusiasts and together we created a small but perfectly formed synchronized cycling performance in a few weeks. Each fellow-Velo made a valuable contribution to choreography, costumes and props, and the original music was composed by one of our team, Ruth Barton. Sporting MonkeyLectric LEDs from Britewheels, our front spokes really made our performance shine.

The Velociteers performed at 8.30 and 9.30pm on both nights of the event to captivated crowds gathered round our arena of tea lights. A black dog threatened chaos when it strayed onto the pitch during one performance but 16 wheels managed to avoid the pooch and we completed the run without a hitch. Next time we’ll wrap the dog in glow sticks and it can be part of the show!

We were honoured to be among the other illuminated Art in the Dark artists exploring ‘community, environment and utopias’. Considering our successful debut, The Velociteers may develop into another wheeled beast for a performance in the not-too-distant future.
