Cycling, weather and bridges

“It’s a nice day for riding a bike” is a comment often directed my way.  Of course I always reply “everyday is a good day to ride a bike”.  As a cyclist, I feel really in tune with the weather.  It’s been nice this week to feel the days getting longer.  Slowly and steadily.  Not like the bridge in the photo.  How do those engineers do it?

In case you don’t recognise it, it is the bridge that takes you over the very busy Onehunga Harbour Rd.  I have probably spent a couple of years of my life trying to cross this road.  And I am not the only one looking forward to its opening.  I started chatting to a local resident recently and she described how she was looking forward to walking from Mangere Bridge township to the new train station and Onehunga.  I suggested she might want to consider cycling there as well.  She was quite receptive to that proposition.

Kylie from MHX said she would let me know this week when this pedestrian/cycle bridge would be ready to go.  It’s definitely not that far away.  Cycle Action is planning a big party to celebrate the opening.  Of course, you are all invited.  And bring a friend.  Bike optional.

    • I made a video of the Onehunga Bay Rd traffic at the stretch of road under that half a cycle bridge.the aim was to convince my Maungakiekie Community Board of the danger to anyone trying to cross. You could wait 5 minutes for a gap in traffic on a busy Saturday morning! So glad we nearly have our own bridge:)
